This trail can be explored all year round and is relatively quick to access from Calgary. Take Highway 40 and turn right onto Nakiska Road. The trailhead is located at your first right turn—look for the Stoney trailhead sign.

This is a very popular trail used by hikers in summer and cross country skiers/ snowshoers in winter. The day we went it was very busy with large groups and families—thankfully the trail was wide enough to accommodate the traffic going in both directions and kept our slow walking toddler out of the way. We were also hiking with another family so there was lots of room for the kids and parents to walk and talk side by side.

The path was kid friendly with some wood teepees located along side and there was a small waterfall at the end which lots of older kids were exploring and playing in. The path also travels alongside the Kananaskis River. I’ve also seen some great pictures of the falls frozen in winter which makes a rewarding mid-way treat.

I’d recommend doing this trail on a weekday to avoid the crowds (unless you feel more comfortable with high traffic trails).Resting space is limited near the falls and with all the congestion we decided to skip out on lunch and head back to the cars. In fact, it was so busy that I didn’t even take a picture!

We’ll keep this trail as an easy option for meeting friends to get in a quick hike out of the city. I’d also like to go back when the kids are older to explore the frozen falls.
